Rated 1 out of 5 by StacyM from Very poor product This is the first bad experience I've had at B&H. I bought this external DVD drive to go with a new laptop with no internal DVD. I have not been able to use it at all. I use this Samsung DVD Writer for everything! It's great for ripping CDs, backing up DVDs, and burning DVDs and CDs. It's a nice improvement over it's predecessor: Samsung USB 2.0 External Optical Drive SE-S084D/TSBS Super WriteMaster, Slim External DVD Writer (Gloss Black). Samsung Portable Dvd Writer Model Se 208 may sometimes be at fault for other drivers ceasing to function These are the driver scans of 2 of our recent wiki members* *Scans were performed on computers suffering from Samsung Portable Dvd Writer Model Se 208 disfunctions. My laptop (Windows 8) doesn't even recognize its existence, even when I tried to run the disk that came with it -- it blipped in and out, and finally nothing at all. I went on the Samsung website hoping for a solution and couldn't find anything helpful. I googled the product and found reviews saying that this DVD writer has a high fail rate. Everyone else rating it here seems to love it, but I have to say, I find it is garbage and I'm taking it back. ![]() ![]() Rated 5 out of 5 by d-b from A good buy I hooked this unit up to a Mac Mini and it came right up with no problem. It ran a DVD and opened a PDF file burned on to a CD. The unit is compact and uses just one USB cable - an advantage if you have a laptop. The printed instructions are terrible and the instructions on the included CD are not much better. Had I not had previous experience with CD writers on a Mac (you have to put a disc in before it shows up on the desktop and drag the resulting icon to trash in order to cause the CD to be ejected etc.) I might have been confused. I assume that the hole on the front is to enable manual ejection of the disc should it be stuck - however nothing in the instructions references this.I gave it five stars because of the price and size. Rated 4 out of 5 by SLChap from Good little drive for the price Good little DVD writer for the price. So far it's done everything I've needed it to do. I bought it as a drive for my MacBook Pro that didn't come with an internal drive. It's a little noisy, but nothing too distracting. I'm mostly just using it for transferring music from discs to my computer, as well as burning an occasional exported project into a DVD-R. Has worked well for both, and I hope it holds up! The drive can be used for a Mac, but unfortunately the software if came with is only for Windows, so so far that's my only negative. Rated 5 out of 5 by Lunkerbass6 from Handy, versatile CD/DVD writer This is an extremely useful addition to my HP netbook. It is Plug and Play, comes with easily installed software to facilitate its use, and enables writing to and reading from a broad range of disk types. It is powered by the USB connection to the netbook so there is no need for an AC adapter. It is sleek and very well made, weighing just a couple of ounces. The Nero Express software provided with it is user-friendly and effective. Rated 4 out of 5 by Dave from Small footprint - Affordable option I have a recent MacBook Pro and wanted an optical drive to compliment the hardware in the laptop. This was an affordable option that is small enough to carry around in my laptop case. It seems to work well with OSX. My one issue with it is that when I inserted a black DVD, I was unable to eject it using the button on the front of the drive. I had to access the OSX disk utility in order to eject it. This happened, I think, because I decided not to burn the disk and ejected the mounted drive. In any case, it offers me hardware that wasn't included in my MBP. Rated 5 out of 5 by David from Exactly What I Needed I recently started using a wonderful mobile workstation, but it is 100% solid-state.there is no optical drive. I needed an external DVD drive in order to be able to install software, to burn backup copies of photos and projects I've worked on, and to watch an occasional movie. So I went onto the B&H website and found this Samsung portable DVD writer. Uninstall avast antivirus for mac. While the manufacturer of my new laptop offers their own branded external DVD drive, it's more than twice the price of this Samsung drive. I am so glad I decided to try this Samsung portable DVD writer instead. I has proven to be absolutely perfect and is exactly what I needed. The laptop recognized the drive as soon as I connected it.
